–  Alphabetisation for second language learners in Europe: Recommendations for further development.

Welcome to the web site of ALFIE, Alphabetisation of Immigrants to Europe.

ALFIE is a Learning Partnership within the Grundtvig / LLP programme, and it
gathers policy makers, researchers, teacher training institutions and training providers in the field of “alphabetization” (initial literacy) for adult immigrants.
The partnership aims primarily at establishing a meeting place for the exchange of knowledge, experience, insights and practical models related to the initial literacy training of immigrants in Europe. Also, producing a list of recommendations that can further the quality and efficiency of initial literacy training is a major objective. The partnership will be contributing to national and European policy through the project’s cooperation with the European Basic Skills Network, EBSN.
The ALFIE partners will explore themes like:
  • teachers’ professional development
  • pedagogical approaches
  • concrete didactic guidelines
  • different systems for assistance in mother language
  • organisational issues
The work will take place in and between a series of five seminars, and will be disseminated through national networks and through cooperation with the EBSN.
Project period: 1 August 2011 – 31 July 2013
